World tea prices continue to increase

Coonoor, Oct. 12An analysis of the market reports in the first seven months of this calendar year shows that compared to the same period of 2008, tea prices increased in all the auction centres round the globe except in Sri Lanka. Still, Sri Lankan teas continued to fetch the world’s highest prices.

4.28% decline

Between January and July, tea prices averaged $2.91 a kg at Colombo auctions – up from $2.82 till June. But, it was 13 cents lower than the price earned in the first seven months of calendar 2008, marking a decline of 4.28 per cent.

Prices rose in all other auction centres. The biggest increase of 17.31 per cent was recorded for Bangladesh teas at Chittagong auctions with an average price of $1.83.

Indonesian tea prices increased by 12.93 per cent in Jakarta auctions to average $1.66. Malawi tea prices rose by 12.69 per cent in Limbe auctions to average $1.51.

Indian prices

Compared to them, Indian tea prices increased at lower percentage. The all-India auction price growth was only 5.29 per cent to record an average price of $1.99.
