Cadila launches new TB drug

Our Bureau

Ahmedabad, Nov. 2 Cadila Pharmaceuticals Ltd has launched Risorine, an anti-tubercular drug, which is expected to increase the turnover of the company by 30-40 per cent, according to an official.

Priced at Rs 25 for six capsules, Risorine is 23 per cent cheaper than the other medicines available in the market for the treatment of tuberculosis, said Dr Naresh R. Patel, a TB specialist.

Risorine is the first boosted rifampicin containing fixed dose combination, but is not a single-dose remedy, he said.

It shows an improvement of 7 per cent in the recovery rate and if administered a course of six months, it increases the chances of cure, decreasing chances of a relapse, according to him.

Risorine is the outcome of a public-private partnership between the Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine, Jammu, an institute of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, and Cadila Pharma. It contains piperine, which inhibits auto induction and maintains same level throughout therapy. It also allows use of lower dosage of rifampicin, 200 mg instead of 450 mg and has lower gastro-intestinal side effects, according to him.
