Employment States - Gujarat IIM-A summer placements begin Divya Trivedi Ahmedabad, Nov. 2 Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad commenced its summer internship process on Monday with firms from Europe, the US, Australia, Asia-Pacific, Africa and West Asia coming to campus for placements. After a tough placement season last year, where there was a 50 per cent drop in recruiters on day one, this year, the placement committee at IIM-A expects a revival from the relatively dull placement season of 2008-09. “We expect to see global consulting firms, investment banks, FMCGs and technology firms. In addition, we are also proactively approaching public and social enterprises,” said Mr Himanshu Nema, Head, IIM-A Placement Committee. In addition to the regular process of the placement season lasting for more than a week, there would be an Entre day, a day dedicated to firms that are smaller in scale but offering exciting profiles to students interested in becoming entrepreneurs. It is being promoted as a stint that will act as a testing ground for students. A place where they can work closely with senior management and see from close quarters how a company is managed. But it is also being viewed as an alternative to explore other avenues apart from the traditional jobs such as finance and marketing that threatened to dry up due to the economic slowdown. Final placementThe final placements for the 2009 batch lasted for an extended period of nine days and saw a shift in the kind of profiles and salaries traditionally offered to students passing out of the IIMs, due to fears of the recession. But the economy is perceived to be on a recovery mode by most of the industries and the Government and IIM-A hopes to do better in its placements this season, according to the spokesperson. IIM-A slipped from the 45th position in 2003 to 99th in 2009 in the list of top 100 business schools as judged by The Economist magazine. But the fact that IIM-A was the only business school from India to make it to that list shows that for recruiters who follow these rankings, it stands a better chance as compared with other business institutes in the country, feel students.
