T.A. Pai Institute wins SRM varsity biz competition

Chennai, Nov. 2 The team from the T.A. Pai Institute of Management, Manipal University, represented by Jim Kim and Priyank Daga, has won ‘BIZABIONA-2009’, an international business plan competition conducted by SRM University.

The team’s presentation, ‘Biocem: Creating value from waste’, dealt with the possibility of using plastics and other junk collected from municipal dumping grounds as a viable substitute for coal in cement factory kilns, said Mr Sudeep Jain, Commissioner, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (Training), Tamil Nadu Government.

The winning team was presented a cash award of Rs 50,000 at the valedictory function held at SRM University at its campus in Kattankulathur near here.

Queensland University from Australia, represented by Navin Chandrasekaran and Sushruth Sathyamurthy, bagged the second prize of Rs 30,000 for their presentation (through video-conferencing) on utilising plasmids in the classroom. Sathiya Organic of the SSN College of Engineering, Chennai, represented by R. Vishnu Raja, Sailakshmi Arunachalam, and R.A. Varalaxmi, bagged the third prize of Rs 20,000 for their presentation on ‘Organic products: Your friends for life.’

The competition was organised by the SRM School of Management’s Centre for Entrepreneurship in association with National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN), a non-profit venture of the Romesh Wadhwani Centre for Entrepreneurship Development.

The competition drew 45 teams from national and international universities, management institutes besides engineering, arts and science colleges. Eight teams were shortlisted for the final presentation.

Dr T. P. Ganesan, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, SRM University, and Dr Jayshree Suresh, Dean, were present on the occasion.
