Chennai, Nov. 2 The kharif oilseeds production has been estimated lower by nearly 10 per cent at 136.5 lakh tonnes (lt) compared with last year by the Central Organisation for Oil Industry and Trade.

The organisation made the estimate at its 47th All-India Convention of Oilseeds, Oil Trade and Industry at Indore on Sunday. According to the estimate, barring sesame, production of all oilseeds is expected to be lower or same as last year. Last year’s kharif oilseed production has been pegged at 150.3 lt.

The estimate has been made based on the acreage reported on different oilseeds by the Ministry of Agriculture.

Groundnut production is seen lower for the second consecutive year at 32.9 lt against 42.2 lt last year. While the acreage had decreased by nearly nine lakh hectares, a lower yield of 741 kg a hectare (791 kg last year) is also adding to the woes. Soyabean production is projected at 85 lt (89 lt) with area dropping a tad and yield to 884 kg (924 kg) a hectare.

Sesame is the only crop showing improvement. Its production is expected to be 4.3 lt (3 lt) with acreage rising 1.5 lakh hectares and yield to 241 kg (193 kg).

Apart from these oilseeds, a higher cotton production of 305 lakh bales (of 170 kg) is expected to be of some help. This will lead to an availability of 94.6 lt of cottonseed against 89.3 lt last year.

In addition, copra production of 6.6 lt (6.5lt) will also chip in taking the total oilseeds output at 237.7 lt against 246.1 lt last year. Besides, 8 lt of ricebran oil and 60,000 tonne of domestically produced palm oil will add to the edible oil supply.

The overall edible oil supply from the kharif oilseeds is estimated to be 50.2 lt against 53.6 lt last year.
