’Other income’

In the results for the July-September (2009) quarter, many banks have reported substantial growth in ‘other income’ that includes earnings from treasury operations.

The Reserve Bank of India conducted the so-called open market operations during the period, buying old securities. Later, some of them were sold back as reissues in auctions at lower prices, incurring losses in the process. It would be of interest to know how much of the profits made by banks were at the expense of the RBI.
