BSNL to share towers with Sistema

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd has entered into an agreement with Sistema Shyam Teleservices Ltd for provision of bandwidth and passive infrastructure on pan-India basis to roll out of latter's network.

BSNL has signed similar agreements with Aircel, Tata Teleservices & Datacom for sharing of towers.

In a bid to earn additional revenues, BSNL has opened up its infrastructure across the country for other telecom service providers.

BSNL's revenues have been dipping over the past two years owing to losing market share.

While sharing BSNL's infrastructure will enable the existing and new operators in faster roll out of their network across the country, for the PSU it is a new revenue stream.

Sistema Shyam offers mobile services under the MTS brand. It has launched in seven circles, including Delhi and Chennai. Russian mobile brand MTS has launched third generation (3G) technology-based wireless data services and has partnered with Korean handset maker AnyDATA for offering data-enabled devices.

MTS' BlackBerry

MTS is hoping to bring BlackBerry devices on its network by the first half of next year. SSTL has more than two million users across six circles and has set up 5,000 base stations.

The company plans to add another 2,000 base stations by the year-end and launch services in four more circles by the end of the calendar year.
