Clean development mechanism in forestry sector catching on

2 projects registered, 7 more in the pipeline.

Mony K. Mathew

Kozhikode, Nov. 3 At a time when concerns over climate change are at a feverish pitch and efforts to rein in its causative factors have topped global agenda, the concept of clean development mechanism (CDM) being increasingly adopted in the forestry sector marks a positive trend.

CDM works as a market instrument that enables emission-reduction projects in developing countries to earn certified emission reduction (CER) credits under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The credits can be sold to industrialised countries to meet part of their emission reduction targets under the Kyoto Protocol.

Indian projects

In India, two CDM forestry projects have already been registered and seven more are in the pipeline and at various stages of validation. CDM activities span the entire spectrum of various sectors and forestry is one among them covering afforestation and reforestation. The activities in the sector include afforestation of degraded lands, conversion of agricultural land to agro-forestry systems and commercial plantations, among other things.

According to Dr P.C. Anil, Consultant, Forest Carbon Offsets, the CDM concept was late in reaching the forestry sector and though the first project in the world got registered in China in 2006, there was a long gap thereafter.

However, it has gained momentum of late with seven projects having been registered this year and 40 more awaiting regulatory nod.
