Raja meets telecom operators

New Delhi, Nov. 3 The Communication and IT Minister, Mr A. Raja, on Tuesday met private players to discuss various issues including better utilisation of the USO fund, possibility of lower tariffs and rural telephony.

No decisions were taken during the meeting.

“It was a wide-ranging discussion on various issues. There was nothing concrete that emerged from the meeting. It seemed more like a confidence-building measure by the Minister,” said one of the players who had attended the meeting.

Another operator said that the Minister had raised a lot of populist issues in a bid to push aside the entire controversy around the investigations being carried out by the CBI.

“With Parliament scheduled to meet shortly, the Minister seems to be looking for a move that would gain popular support. There was no specific agenda for the meeting,” said an operator.

The Minister is expected to meet other sectors such as the ISPs over the next few days.
