Opinion - Letters
Open agriculture

The crisis on hand is well sketched out in the article “Why not covered agriculture?” (Business Line, November 4), but the solutions are yet to be found, not to mention the scepticism associated with covered agriculture. Global warming is a real threat worldwide. With uncertainty looming large on predictability of weather Gods, farmers are at a loss, financially too.

With the exception of Andhra Pradesh, State governments need to allot sufficient funds for investment in agriculture. It appears this priority has taken a ‘backseat’. Cover agriculture works well for floricultural products, which are exclusively meant for exports. Cash agricultural crops, pulses, etc., grown on extensive areas need ‘open agriculture’.

Cost factor of ‘greenhouses’ even for floricultural category can be ‘prohibitively’ high which is more than offset by a comfortable margin obtained on export sales realisation.
