Pune, Nov.4 Technology and services provider Dell India is set to launch a service to digitally connect classrooms across the country and enable the use of technology to deliver quality education.

The company is in talks with several schools and universities, and will introduce the programme by the end of the current quarter, Mr Joseph Kremer, General Manager, Public sector, Asia-Pacific, and Managing Director, ANZ, Dell Inc, has said.

“There is an increasing need to prepare the education sector with technological tools. It is important that we transform the learning environment for the digital age and align with the needs of the connected generation,” Mr Kremer said. He added, “Dell wants to play a role in know what is happening around the world and bring the best practices that we discover. We expect to roll out the service by the end of this quarter.”

New products

To support the initiative, Dell will not only create the infrastructure and provide service but also launch new products, net-books that are rugged and can be upgraded for longer span of utility and anti-microbial keyboards, for instance, Mr Kremer said.

Dell already has presence in the education space through its Youth Connect programme that works with 11 NGOs and provides IT education to underprivileged children. The new initiative will essentially target private schools and universities.

According to Springboard Research, IT spend in the education sector in India is expected to double to $704 million by 2012.

Mr Neeraj Gupta, GM (Public), Dell India, declined to provide specific figures relating to the new initiative but said that given that there were 50,000 private schools and 1,200 universities, the scope of the programme was huge.
