Mr Ashwani Jain has taken over as Executive Director at Powertel, two company officials told Business Line. Mr Jain was earlier Executive Director, Northern Region - 2 (Chandigarh, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir) with PowerGrid. The erstwhile head of Powertel, Mr T.K. Wali, has been elevated as Executive Director, Corporate Planning, with the parent company. The changes are believed to be in line with PowerGrid’s focus on positioning its telecom arm as a one-stop provider of optical bandwidth capacity and passive telecom infrastructure. Long-term planThe company has long-term plans to hive off Powertel — which currently operates as a ring-fenced department within PowerGrid — into a separate subsidiary. The power transmission major wheels around 45 per cent of the power generated in the country through its transmission towers. Moreover, it has 21,000 km of optical fibre network. The company has been keen to lease capacity on it towers and optical fibres to both Indian and overseas telecom operators as a means of generating additional revenues. For the current year, PowerGrid has an annual revenue target of Rs 150 crore from telecom services and by March 2012, plans to expand it to Rs 500-600 crore.
