Anti-Malaria vaccine trials

Hyderabad, Nov. 6

Avaccine being developed by the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), New Delhi to prevent malaria will be entering phase I clinical trails in next six months, according to Mr M. K. Bhan, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. The vaccine, being developed with the funding from Bill & Milinda Gates Foundation, would prevent malaria caused by plasmodium vivax, Mr Bhan told newspersons here on Thursday. On the proposed Biotech Regulatory Authority, the official said the bill was awaiting Cabinet's approval to be tabled in the Parliament. Once operational, the Authority would replace the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC), he added. - Our Bureau
