Telecommunications Mobile number portability is ‘elitist talk’: Idea Our Bureau Chennai, Nov. 6 Number portability is an “elitist talk”, says Mr Himanshu Kapania, Director, Operations, Idea Cellular Ltd. The telecom industry, where competition has driven the tariffs so low and where 95 per cent of the subscribers are “pre-paid”, cannot be the one that is waiting for number portability, Mr Kapania said at a conference organised here by Loyola Institute of Business Administration. A student asked Mr Kapania whether mobile telecom operators were ready for mobile number portability (MNP). Mr Kapania answered that Idea Cellular was ready, but observed that there was really no demand for number portability in the country. Later, he explained to Business Line that in the global telecom markets customers typically change operators because of the tariffs. But in India the tariffs are anyway low, across most operators, he said. Besides, the facility would involve a fee to pay for the infrastructure needed to make portability possible. Typically, pre-paid customers are price-sensitive and, therefore, would not opt for number portability if it involves an additional cost, Mr Kapania said. As far as post-paid customers are concerned, about 30 per cent have dual SIM cards and they would not need MNP. Therefore, the demand for MNP is small, he said. Still, if it comes, Idea Cellular is ready for it, Mr Kapania added.
