Wellcome Trust, DBT India Alliance fellowships for biomedical research

The Wellcome Trust-Department of Biotechnology India Alliance will be announcing 40 early-career fellowships for post-doctoral studies within a couple of weeks.

Experts from the partnership, formed recently to nurture talent in biomedical research, had interviewed 60 doctoral scholars who had applied for the fellowships, Mr Mark Walport, Director, Wellcome Trust (UK) told newspersons here.

Dr M. K. Bhan, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, Government of India said the partnership would result in innovation and original research over a period.

The official said the interest in biomedical research and Ph.D. programmes was increasing in Andhra Pradesh.

“I don’t have specific numbers but the rate of production of Ph.Ds in the country has been increasing at 20/ annum for the last five years,” he said.

The estimated growth of biotech industry to $7 billion revenue/annum would also augur well for the researchers, he added.

Ms Anuradha Lohia, Chief Executive Officer, Wellcome Trust-DBT India Alliance said about 70 fellowships would be given in various categories.

“The value of fellowships ranges from Rs 1.5 crore to Rs 3.5 crore depending on the category,” she said.

The duration of the fellowship is between three and four years depending on the nature of the project.

The Wellcome Trust-DBT India Alliance intends to spend £80 million in five years on the fellowship programme.
