Call for more road development

The World Bank report, India Project Portfolio 2009, indicates how the support from the Bank has helped our transport sector. It has supported Andhra Pradesh to upgrade State highways, is helping upgrade rail and road connectivity in Mumbai, improve road networks in Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Orissa, Punjab, Mizoram, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh, and upgrade rural roads in select districts of Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh under the scheme for national and multi-State projects. Under the same scheme, the Bank’s assistance has been made available to construct a section of the Golden Quadrilateral in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar such as Allahabad Bypass Project and Lucknow-Muzaffarpur National Highway Project. However, the report also makes it clear that the country needs to invest more of GDP in infrastructure to sustain its levels of growth in the medium term and to spread the benefits more widely.
