‘Widen tax base to promote growth’

Our Bureau

Bangalore, Nov. 8 The Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman, Mr K. Rahman Khan, urged that the tax base be widened so that the Government would be able to promote welfare and growth.

Mr Khan was delivering the keynote address at a two-day national tax conference organised by the Karnataka State Chartered Accountants Association (KSCAA) and the All-India Federation of Tax Practitioners (AIFTP) on Saturday.

He pointed out that only 40 million Indians, out of a population of over one billion, are taxpayers. He urged “intellectuals and tax professionals to ponder” over the fact that this situation exists even though the country’s Gross Domestic Product is over rupees three trillion and the saving rate is about 35 per cent.

“We cannot ignore the fact that corruption and tax evasion have assumed monstrous proportions,” he added.

Mr Khan urged tax professionals to utilise the Parliamentary Standing Committee mechanism to air their grievances and suggestions on proposed legislation including the new tax code.
