Interdisciplinary research is need of hour in nano technology, says expert

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Nov. 10 Strong interdisciplinary research is the need of the hour for reaping full benefits of nano particles in healthcare applications, according to Prof N.K. Ganguly, Advisor, Translational Health Science and Technology Institute, New Delhi.

In his inaugural address at the Indo-US Workshop on ‘Nano Technology: Applications and Implications’ at Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT) here on Tuesday, Prof Ganguly said the regulatory bodies in the developing countries had no idea about nano particle-based delivery systems in healthcare.

Research front

On the research front, the useful applications of nano particles were proved in the context animal trails, though much needed to be done on bringing it to the human healthcare delivery, he said.

Developments

However, in the US some very good trails were happening. In the George Town University, nano particle-based models were being developed to kill breast cancer cells, which would soon be entering patients’ trails, the scientist said.

Green concerns

The nano technology applications also had to deal with environmental concerns. “There is no clarity on this and we are looking forward to clarity in this area,” he added.

Dr J.S. Yadav, Director, IICT, said the big challenge for nano technology applications was the testing of toxicology. “The full impact of very miniature quantities on physiology has to be seen,” he added.
