Tropical Cyclone Phyan crosses coast near Mumbai

Vinson Kurian

Thiruvananthapuram, Nov. 11 Tuesday’s deep depression over east-central Arabian Sea tracked north-northeast to intensify as a cyclonic storm, named Phyan.

According to the US Navy’s Joint Typhoon Warning Centre (JTWC), Phyan may already have made a landfall just south of Mumbai on Wednesday afternoon.

TO WEAKEN

The JTWC forecast further said that Phyan is forecast to continue tracking northward to north-northeastward over land and should dissipate within the next 12-24 hours due to further land interaction and strong vertical wind shear.

Interaction with land cuts off the moisture needed for the system to thrive as also denies the smooth surface of water for the system to move around to where it willed.

Vertical wind shear, which is the sudden spurt in wind speeds with height, lops off the storm head and kills the system even when on water.

An India Meteorological Department (IMD) update agreed later in the evening that the system has crossed the coast near Mumbai.

It had earlier located the system at about 130 km west of Ratnagiri and 250 km of south-southwest of Mumbai on Wednesday morning and said that it would intensify further before crossing the south Gujarat and north Maharashtra coast between Alibagh and Valsad by Wednesday night only.

HEAVY RAIN ALERT

A Government spokesman speaking from New Delhi on the condition of anonymity also concurred that the system may have already blown over Mumbai and neighbourhood on Wednesday afternoon itself. In any case, the IMD has forecast widespread rainfall with heavy to very heavy falls and isolated extremely heavy falls exceeding 25 cm over Konkan, Goa, madhya Maharashtra and south Gujarat region during the next two days.

Gale winds speed reaching 70-80 km/hr and gusting to 90 km/hr are likely along and off Maharashtra and south Gujarat coasts during next 24 hours.

Sea condition will be high to very high along and off the Maharashtra and south Gujarat coasts.

Storm surge of about one metre above the astronomical tides is likely over Alibagh, Raigarh, Greater Mumbai and Thane district of Maharashtra and Valsad district of Gujarat at time of landfall.

Fishermen were advised not to venture into the sea along and off these coasts.

The Regional Met Centre, Chennai, said that the northeast monsoon has been vigorous over Kerala and active over interior Tamil Nadu during the 24 hours ending Wednesday morning.

Rainfall occurred at most places over Kerala and coastal Karnataka; at many places over Tamil Nadu, interior Karnataka; and at a few places over Rayalaseema and Lakshadweep.

Isolated rainfall occurred over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Short-term forecasts by IMD valid until Monday next spoke about the possibility of significant decrease in rainfall activity over Maharashtra and Goa.

But scattered rain or thundershowers are likely over northwest India from Thursday presumably from interaction of residual moisture that Cyclone Phyan has fanned in over mainland and the western disturbance regime.
