Rs 444 cr for development of roads in Naxal-affected States

New Delhi, Nov. 17 To improve connectivity in Naxal-affected areas, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has sanctioned 22 proposals for Rs 444.48 crore to develop 462 km of roads in Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.

The approved projects include seven stretches of State roads with a total length of 135.46 km in Andhra Pradesh, 13 stretches (261.2 km) in Chhattisgarh, and two stretches (66.7 km) in Madhya Pradesh.

Besides this, 25 proposals for Rs 1,180.83 crore for the development of 938 km of roads are in different stages of processing.

These include proposals of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa and Uttar Pradesh.

The stretches that have been sanctioned include improvements to Rajahmundry-Bhadrachalam Road and Bhadrachalam-Chandrupatla Road in Andhra Pradesh; widening of Bisunpur-Surajpur-Odgi Road and upgrading of Kusmi-Samri Road (SH-12A) in Chattisgarh; construction of Baihar-Paraswad-Lamta Road and Garhi-Motinala Road in Madhya Pradesh, said an official release.

Special cell created

The Government has approved schemes for development of National Highways and State Roads in Left Wing Extremism (LWE) affected areas of 33 districts in eight States at an estimated cost of Rs 7,300 crore.

Under the scheme, development of identified stretches of National Highways (1,202 km) and State Roads (4,363 km) are planned to be taken up in a phased manner in the next three years.

But this is subject to adequate security arrangements to be provided by the respective State governments/Central agencies.

An allocation of Rs 500 crore has been made for 2009-2010.

To co-ordinate this, a special cell has been created in the Road Transport and Highways Ministry for Left Wing Extremist (LWE) affected areas.
