Land acquisition for Beypore Marine Park in final stage

Mony K. Mathew

Kozhikode, Nov. 23

The land acquisition process for the Marine Park at Beypore, near here, proposed to be set up by Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (Kinfra), is in final stage.

The park is to come up on 25 acres of land close to the Beypore fishing harbour and it will feature a seafood pre-processing centre, marine products value-added production centre, fishing boat repairs and service and a data management and communication centre.

The park is estimated to cost Rs 10 crore and 90 per cent per cent of the funding will be met by the Union Government under its Assistance to States for Infrastructure Development for Exports (ASIDE) programme. It is expected to provide employment to around 2,000 persons, mainly women, and drive export growth by Rs 300 crore over five years.

The pre-processing unit will be set up by Kinfra in association with Marine Products Export Development Agency (MPEDA) and the State Fisheries Department. The centre, with two peeling units of 150 workers each, will have effluent disposal arrangements for ensuring environmental safety and pollution control.

Boatyard

Beypore is already known for its boat-building industry and the region is dotted with a number of boat-building and repairing units. However, they have been following a conventional system and the park will provide facilities for establishing a modern boatyard for building sophisticated fishing and other boats.

The park will provide facilities for better data management of fish resources and fishing techniques and also for communication with the fishermen when they are in the high seas.
