No concrete plans on utilisation of Singur land

Kolkata, Nov. 23

“As far as I know, land allotted for specific purpose cannot remain unutilised for an indefinite period,” said the West Bengal Chief Secretary, Mr A. Chakraborty, in reply to queries from newspersons at Writers’ Buildings here on Monday about the probable utilisation of Singur land, which was allotted to Tata Motors for setting up an automobile plant.

The Tatas had earlier indicated that they would vacate the Singur land if suitably compensated. “As far as I know, there has been no progress on this issue,” he said.

The State Government, the Chief Secretary said, is yet to receive any firm proposal from the Railway authorities about probable utilisation of the Singur land by the Railways. The Railway Minister recently announced that her Ministry would welcome the idea of utilising the Singur land jointly with the State Government.

Referring to the recent visit of the officials of Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd to Singur, Mr Chakraborty said BHEL was planning to set up power plants and, therefore, scouting for suitable land. “Its officials visited not only Singur but also several other locations in the country for the purpose,” he said. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Heavy Industries has offered 300 acres in Durgapur to the West Bengal Government for setting up any project of its choice. “The land now belongs to a PSU under the Ministry but there is no plan to utilise the land by the PSU,” Mr Chakraborty said.
