SIPCOT plans training facility

R. Balaji

Chennai, Nov. 24 The State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) plans to set up facility in public-private partnership to train workers for the manufacturing sector, according to sources.

The programme is part of a clutch of projects aimed at facilitating industrial investments and enabling availability of trained manpower in industrial units. SIPCOT, the State-run agency for providing industrial infrastructure and land allocation for the manufacturing sector, has completed the designs for the project to come up at Oragadam, an industrial suburb of Chennai.

It will soon identify a private partner, an educational institution, to run Government-approved and industry designed vocational courses covering areas such as the automobile, electronics, electrical, apparel, footwear, logistics and animation sectors. The facilities will also help train members of the families whose land have been acquired for industrial development, the source said.

Dorms too

While the training facility will enhance the skills of the labour pool, SIPCOT also hopes to set up infrastructure to make the workers available close to the work spot. It plans to set up two dormitories to accommodate over a 1,000 workers each at a cost of Rs 20 crore.

The two dormitories are to come up at Sriperumbudur and near Tirupur, the hub of knitwear export units, the sources said.
