Stress on alternative uses of tobacco

Our Bureau

Rajahmundry, Nov. 24 There is an imperative need to reorient research towards alternative uses of tobacco, especially in the field of pharmaceuticals, as the campaign against smoking is intensifying, according to Dr S.D Sikhamani, Vice-Chancellor of the AP Horticultural University.

He was speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural session of the three-day national seminar on tobacco, which began here in the Central Tobacco Research Institute (CTRI) on Tuesday. He said many tobacco extracts were found to have pharmaceutical applications and more research was required on those lines. Extraction of edible oil and proteins from tobacco was also a promising field of research. Dr V. Krishnamurthy, Director of CTRI, said there was good demand for Indian tobacco in the international market at present and farmers were getting good prices for the past two or three years.

But the long-term objective of reducing the area under tobacco cultivation and improving yields and quality should not be lost sight of.
