Food inflation

Food inflation is a matter of great concern. Shortages on the supply side is the main problem. Finance Minister "Pranab wants States to improve supplyside mechanism" (Business Line, November 27).

The authorities can introduce a subsidy mechanism through PDS to improve fast movement of surplus goods, if any, in their States. But due to drought, flood, etc., foodgrains and vegetable prduction has come down.

Further, the demand goes up as the population increases. Agricultural growh is not able to reach the expected targets. There is a growing demand for a `second Green Revolution'.

Will this put pressure on the adoption on widespread use of genetically modified crops? We need more transparency, more tests to allay fears and also particulars about the countries that have banned the use of such foods.
