Railways States - Other States Delhi Metro moves one billion passengers since 2002 Our Bureau New Delhi, Nov. 27 The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has chugged past a significant milestone on Thursday. It has ferried one billion (100 crore) passengers – cumulatively – since it started its operations on the Christmas day in 2002. While the number is almost equal to the population of the country, it must be noted that this is driven by passenger loyalty to the system and massive expansion of the metro network over the last few years. The Delhi Metro began its journey on December 25, 2002 on a small stretch of 8.5 km running from Shahdara to Tis Hazari. At that time, about 35,000 passengers were using it daily, said an official release. Now, with the network touching nearly 90 km spanning three lines, the average daily ridership has touched nine lakhs on an average. In specific terms, the number of people who have availed the Delhi Metro services touched 1,014,955,894 on Thursday. Also, the Delhi Metro recorded its highest-ever ridership during the India International Trade Fair (IITF) this year with the figure reaching 10.29 lakh on November 24, 2009. DMRC had made elaborate arrangements to handle extra passengers at the Pragati Maidan station during the trade fair. Extra token counters were opened, additional Metro and security personnel deployed and number of train trips on Line-3 (Noida City Centre – Dwarka Sec-09) were increased from 410-490.
