Railways Rlys saves Rs 5 crore using wind energy
The Minister informed that till Nov. 10, the plant had generated about 16.3 million units.
‘The Railways commissioned windmills to generate 10.5 MW in 2009, in Kasturirangapuram and Urumangalam village, Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu.' Our Bureau New Delhi, Nov. 28 The Indian Railways has saved Rs 5 crore in seven months by drawing energy from the windmills commissioned in Tirunelveli for the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) at Perambur, Chennai. This is according to data provided in Parliament by Mr E. Ahamed, Minister of State for Railways. The Railways commissioned the windmills to generate 10.5 MW on March 30, 2009, in Kasturirangapuram and Urumangalam village, Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. The windmill farm was set up at a cost of Rs 66.05 crore. The Minister informed the House that till November 10, the farm had generated about 16.3 million units and helped achieve savings of Rs 5 crore. But, the Minister did not provide details on how the savings had been calculated. Additionally, on other steps taken to harness renewable energy, the Minister said that the Railways has provided solar-based water heating systems of different capacities for some training institutes, running rooms and rest houses. The Railways has also completed electrification of more than 1,200 manned level crossings with solar-based lighting system.
