Shipping/Ports Kolkata port stays headless Our bureau Kolkata Port Trust has been functioning without a full-fledged Chairman for the past five months. The Deputy Chairman in charge of the Kolkata Dock System - there is another Deputy Chairman in-charge of Haldia dock - being a senior person, has been functioning as the acting Chairman. However for a major port like Kolkata, which is afflicted with myriad problems, such a delay is uncalled for. Why this delay, wonder many, more so when the Union Minister of State for Shipping is from West Bengal. Is it due to a tussle among bureaucrats to grab the post? Or is it because of a tussle between the State and the Centre over nomination of a Chairman? The chairmanship of a much maligned port should not appear as a plum posting for a senior bureaucrat. But one never knows. The last Chairman continued for seven years, perhaps for the first time in the history of the port. We now hear that the earlier names considered for chairmanship were cancelled. A new panel will be prepared. Which means further delay.
