Prospects for Asian transport sector

Our Bureau

Two statements are available about the prospects of the Asian transport sector. According to Nomura, the Asian economic recovery is helping intra-Asia trade return to profit. With sub-trades such as intra-Australia trade being already in profit, it is estimated that intra- Asia's container shipping market will be the first to become profitable. Besides benefits from Asia's consumption boom, the supply-demand balance on intra- Asia trades has been less of a concern, says the report released by the Japanese financial group. The Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) presents a different scenario. Releasing its data for October, AAPA suggests that the recovery remains tentative. AAPA international passengers numbers reached 11.1 million in October, slightly higher than the previous month but still 3 per cent below the levels of October last year. AAPA's Director-General has been quoted as saying that fuel prices, environmental commitments and other regulatory issues will continue to pose challenges.
