EXCON 2009, the construction equipment and technology trade fair which concluded here on Sunday, saw business deals worth Rs 2,000 crore being struck, the event host, CII, said.

The five-day event generated business enquiries worth around Rs 10,000 crore, CII said citing a survey conducted by IMRB International.

India, with a five per cent market share of the earth moving and construction equipment (ECE), is considered the most promising ECE scene. Mr Vipin Sondhi, Chairman, Excon 2009, said the event “has grown in leaps and bounds. The footfalls increased two times.”

Some 435 exhibitors including 135 from overseas participated in the two-yearly fair and conference; it attracted 30,000 business visitors and saw nearly 400 product launches. Companies came from Russia, China, Singapore, South Korea, Germany, Italy and the UK and scouted for potential partners to set up their India manufacturing base and trade, CII said.

Though OEM (original equipment manufacturer) sales are expected to account for over 70 per cent of the market share, Excon was a platform for component manufacturers to explore supply opportunities with OEMs, it said.

The domestic ECE industry estimates to grow two-fold from around Rs 20,000 crore to around Rs 40,000 crore during the 11th Plan period, 2007-2012. During this period, it estimates a financial requirement of $ 500 billion for infrastructure in the country.

Inaugurated by the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Mr Kamal Nath, EXCON was marked by demonstration of equipment for earthmoving and construction, lifting, material handling, concrete making, hydraulics and pneumatics, drills, power tools, electronics, besides, components, accessories and consumables.
