Centre studying Kerala's concerns over co-op reforms

Thiruvananthapuram, Nov. 29

The Union Finance Minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, has directed his Ministry to look into contentious issues with Kerala Government over the Vaidyanathan Committee recommendations.

This follows the talks that visiting State Minister of Cooperation, Mr G. Sudhakaran, had with Mr Mukherjee aimed at facilitating early acceptance of the report by the State Government.

The State Government's reservations about the Committee's recommendations had to do mostly with the curbs sought to be imposed on the functioning of cooperative credit institutions.

The Committee's observation that the woes of the cooperative credit system could be traced largely to interference by the State Governments too had invited the latter's wrath.

The Minister's statement has come amidst reports that the State and the Centre were close to an understanding on the recommendations.

Talking to newspersons here on Saturday, Mr Sudhakaran said that the State Government's objections to the Vaidyanathan Committee report on restructuring the rural short-term cooperative credit structure were neither political nor ideological.

Kerala could not accept the report without changes and there was no question of the State changing its stand on the issue merely because West Bengal and Tripura have chosen to do exactly the contrary.

In Bengal, the cooperative sector has hardly emerged out from its birth pangs, but in Kerala it has matured to a stage where it is able to boast Rs 53,000 crore in credit and deposits, the Minister said.
