The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has selected three consortia led by Accenture, Mahindra Satyam-Morpho, and L1 Identity Solutions, to implement the core biometric identification system for the ‘Aadhaar' programme that sought to assign a unique identification number to all the Indian residents.

A total of 200 million residents are expected to be de-duplicated by a combination of the three biometric solution agencies in the first stage of the programme that is expected to run for two years, the UIDAI said in a press release on Thursday.

The job

The three agencies would have to design, supply, install, commission, maintenance and support the multi-modal Automatic Biometric Identification Subsystem (ABIS).

The three vendors would also be involved in development of multi-modal Software Development Kit (SDK) for client enrolment station, verification server, manual adjudication and monitoring function of the UID application.

“We will build a new system to help manage identity-related de-duplication and verification requests from both public and private organisations. We will also assist UIDAI in performance benchmarking and management of data quality for continuous improvement of the biometric solution,” an Accenture statement said in New Delhi after bagging the contract.

Mahindra Satyam tied up with the Paris-based Safran group arm, Morpho, that was known for biometric technologies and identification solutions to bid for the project. “We will develop and maintain systems that will cross-check every new application by sifting through the biometrics database, preventing accidental or fraudulent duplication,” Mr C.P. Gurnani, Chief Executive Officer of Mahindra Satyam, said here in a separate press release.

“While Morpho will provide the biometric technology, Mahindra Satyam will integrate and provide support across platforms and databases,” he added.
