CHENNAI, Feb. 21

THE Kochi-based ABAD group has set up a 2,300-tonne cold store for a range of processed and perishable products at Sriperumbudur, about 45 km west of Chennai.

According to a company press release, this is the second such facility run by the group. The ABAD group plans to set up a chain of cold stores near major ports and cities in India, the release said.

The cold store near Chennai hopes to take advantage of the major trade in seafood, fruits and vegetables, and the ice cream trade, which is urban-centred. The facility conforms to the EU norms of quality standards and the equipment had been imported from leading players in Spain, Sweden and Belgium, said company officials.

It has four chambers of 575 pallets each, and seafood, meat, milk and vegetable products can be stored separately. One chamber is ready for use and orders are being booked, and the others can be brought on stream within 24 hours depending on the requirement. The products can be stored on pallets measuring 1200 mm X 800 mm X 1500 mm and handling is mechanised. The dock levellers and shelters will ensure transfer of products from refrigerated trucks and containers to cold store with minimum shift in temperature.

Depending on the product requirement the chambers can be maintained between - 18 to - 25 degrees C, the officials said.

ABAD group has interests in aquaculture, construction, real estate development, hotels and resorts. The company plans to launch a range of Sea Sparkle brand of sea foods, the release said.
