Software Invensys to expand BaaN India operations Our Bureau
HYDERABAD, March 21 INVENSYS Inc, the UK-based international production technology and management group, has announced the group's plan to expand India's BaaN Development Centre and infusion of fresh investment in the next three-four years. The Chief Operating Officer of Invensys Software, Mr Leo Quinn, on Thursday said based on the successful experience in end-to-end development of BaaN products over several years, understanding the dynamics of remote product development, the scalability of the centre to accommodate more people quickly, we have decided to expand India operations. The BaaN development centre at Hyderabad is engaged in development of software for ERP, financials, migration, aerospace and defence, database drivers and e-payments. It is now engaged in products, which go beyond ERP covering e-sourcing, e-procurement, e-service, e-service remote and e-project. BaaN is a global provider of B2B collaborative commerce solutions and a unit of the production management division of Invensys plc, after the latter acquired it. While detailing the company expansion plan, which is part of the global restructure drive, Mr Quinn said the BaaN development centre would also be developing software for other Invensys production management division companies such as Wonderware, Foxboro, APV and Triconex, at Hyderabad R&D centre. This move represents a key component in Invensys' overall strategy to lower ongoing software development costs, increase productivity and deliver on the promise of interoperable sensor-to-supply chain solutions. The President of Invensys Software, Mr Weng Chong Lee, said, ``Invensys and BaaN have a large base of customers worldwide as well as in India. There is a huge potential in the Asia-Pacific region, which presently accounts for about 18 per cent of the company business. Of particular significance is the Chinese market, where MNCs with whom we are associated are looking at our solutions.'' BaaN started India operations in 1988 while BaaN development centre's Hyderabad operations were initiated in 1995 with a team of 40 people. It has gradually increased its professional strength to about 300. Mr Quinn said as per the expansion strategy, it is proposed to increase the strength by about 30 per cent. Till currently BaaN had invested about $30 million in India. As a part of the expansion plan, it is proposed to invest about 10 to 15 per cent of this $ 30 million investment each year for the next three years. The R&D centre is working on a range of products, which are independent of the ERP package. "Unlike the traditional approach of bundling them as solutions, we have productised them," Mr Gopal Madnani, Chief Executive Officer, BaaN Info, said.
