Horticulture/Fruits & Vegetables Info-Tech - Internet Web site for fruit, vegetable sales in Chennai Our Bureau
CHENNAI, March 21 POO, kaai, kani flowers, fruits and vegetables that is what Pookaaikani.com will deliver to the residents of the city if they call up its call centre or log on to its Web site, Pookaaikani.com, and place their orders. According to the Chief Executive Officer, Mr K. Shyam, the company is a perishable goods supplier that is taking advantage of the information technology tools. Currently, the company sources a large part of its supplies from the major markets in the city, particularly, Koyambedu. But, it is also simultaneously tying-up with farms in Udhagamandalam, Thanjavur, Chinglepet and Madurantakam. Together, produce from about 350 acres is potentially available to Pookaaikani, he said. The company has over 8,000 customers registered on its Web site, about 60 per cent of whom place orders regularly, Mr Shyam said. In his estimate, the Koyambedu market alone accounts for about Rs 10 crore worth of daily sales. By the time the retail customers receive the products they pay at least twice as much. The advantage to the customer is that they can avoid the hassles of a crowded market place, bargaining with shopkeepers or vendor, and the erratic prices and inconsistent quality.
