Delhi luxury tax

The Delhi Government's decision to hike luxury tax on items such as cigarettes and tobacco products to increase revenues in the recent State Budget is welcome. However, it might have some long-term repercussions.

A higher luxury tax on domestic cigarettes would lead to a decline in their sales and could tempt cigarette vendors to sell cheap cigarettes smuggled in from neighbouring countries.

These cigarettes, apart from causing huge losses to the exchequer, also are of sub-standard quality and could cause major health hazards.

The Government should consider these implications before it implements the Budget measures.
