THE Kerala Government will prepare an action plan for developing various waterways in the State and make them navigable for traffic.

An official spokesman quoted the Irrigation Minister, Mr T.M. Jacob, as saying that all important waterways in the State, including inland waterways, will be developed with Central assistance to render them suitable for passenger traffic, movement of freight and tourism.

To begin with, the Kollam-Kovalam stretch will be taken up for development. The Kottappuram-Kasargode stretch will follow.

Both have been assured Central assistance, the Minister told a high-level meeting held at the Secretariat Durbar Hall.

The Transport Minister, Mr K. B. Ganeshkumar, who was also present, said that waterways are vital for the State's economy and would be given top priority by the Transport Department.

The Irrigation Minister called for co-operation from user agencies for the co-ordinated development of the sector.
