Removing the clogs

Bijoy Ghosh

The Tamil Nadu Government is desilting the Adyar river, which flows through Chennai before emptying itself into the Bay of Bengal. The de-silting operations form part of a long-term project to clean up the city's waterways - the Cooum and Adyar rivers and the Buckingham Canal. The desilting project involves intercepting and treating sewage and effluents before they enter the waterway; desilting and widening the river mouth; and removing the sand bars across the river mouth. The waterways project for Chennai city and 13 other urban settlements in the State has financial support from the National River Conservation Programme of the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests.
