Industry & Economy - Anti-dumping

Govt may not relent on plea for dumping rules

K.R. Srivats

NEW DELHI, April 18

THE Government is unlikely to immediately relent to the demands of a section of the domestic manufacturers on framing of specific rules to tackle the problem of circumvention of anti-dumping measures.

"The formulation of anti-circumvention rules will have to be taken up only after a careful study. Such rules may even hurt us," Dr V.S. Seshadri, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, said at a workshop on `Negotiating industrial tariffs: The road ahead', organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

A CII member representing a company that manufactures compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) in the country claimed that the anti-dumping measures against imports of CFL from China were not bringing "effective relief" to the domestic industry, as there was "blatant circumvention of anti-dumping measures."
