Convergence Telecom industry seeks composite licence regime Our Bureau
NEW DELHI, June 18 A SECTION of the telecom industry has demanded a revision of the proposals of the draft Convergence Bill in a manner that would bring into play a ``genuine convergence'' regime in the country. The Convergence Bill is currently pending with Parliament. Citing the UK Government's Convergence Bill that is set to provide a licence-free regime with minimum regulation, the President of the Telecom Industry and Services Association of India (TISA), Mr P.K. Sandell, told newspersons that there was need to introduce a licence-free regime here on the lines of the UK model. ``If we are not able to have a licence-free regime, we must at least have a composite licence regime, which alone would take care of all the unfortunate conflicts the industry is now facing based on the apprehension of turf encroachments'', he said. TISA, along with the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham), has favoured a minimal role for the proposed super regulator in fixation of tariffs for the telecom services.
