Anti-dumping Duty on strontium carbonate from China to be reviewed K.R. Srivats
NEW DELHI, June 27 THE Designated Authority in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry has initiated a review on continuance of anti-dumping duty on granular grades of strontium carbonate imports from China. Strontium carbonate is used in the manufacture of glass face plates for colour television tubes and also in the manufacture of hard ferrites. It is an effective x-ray barrier. Colour TV picture tube manufacturers import strontium carbonate into the country. Strontium carbonate is also added to special glasses and ceramic glasses besides being used as a catalyst in radiation resistant glass. The Finance Ministry had imposed a definitive anti-dumping duty on imports of strontium carbonate from China in 2001. Industry sources said that Travancore Chemical & Manufacturing Co Ltd (TCM), a producer of strontium carbonate and a petitioner for anti-dumping investigation, had now expressed its inability to manufacture granular grade of strontium carbonate on a commercial basis to the Customs, Excise and Gold (Control) Appellate Tribunal (CEGAT). The company had submitted that any revocation of anti-dumping duty on imports of granular grade of strontium carbonate from China was unlikely to hurt its interests. Strontium carbonate is produced using the ore celestite as the raw material. Celestite contains around 75-80 per cent of strontium sulphate and is adequately available in the country. Good deposits of celestite are reportedly available in Tiruchi district and surrounding areas in Tamil Nadu. The granular grade of strontium carbonate is called as glass grade and is made by calcining the powder grade.
