Kerala: Rs 20-cr Central aid for tourism

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, July 26
KERALA will get Rs 20 crore from the Tourism Department of the Centre for implementing a slew of tourism projects in the State.
The projects include development of tourist cruise terminals, convention centres, amusement parks and ropeways. The funds will also utilised for acquisition of cruise vessels and tourist trains, the Tourism and Fisheries Minister, Mr K.V. Thomas, said in the State Assembly on Friday.
Making a special statement on his discussions with the Union Ministers for Tourism and Agriculture and the officials concerned in Delhi recently, he said the Centre would extend assistance to the tune of Rs 50 lakh for holding boat races and other festivals in Kerala.
He informed the House that the Centre had agreed to include Kochi, Thekkady, Madurai and Rameswaram among the new tourism circuits being formed. In the fisheries sector, the Centre has agreed to include seven important fishing harbours in the State in Tenth Plan. These include Cheruvathur in Kasargod district (Rs 20 crore), Koyilandi in Kozhikode district (Rs 23 crore), Thalai in Kannur district (Rs 19.70 crore), Chettuva in Thrissur district (Rs 15 crore) and Thottapilly in Alapuzha district (Rs 16.30 crore).
