Power AP Govt gearing to tide over deepening power crisis Our Bureau
HYDERABAD, Sept. 16 FOLLOWING scattered rainfall due to deficient south-west monsoon in Andhra Pradesh and increased use of power for farm sector operations, the State administration is grappling with the situation of lower hydel power generation and the negative fallouts of the shutdown of 1,470 MW Neyveli power station and Kalpakkam nuclear plant. The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, who held a review meeting on the power situation in the State here on Monday, appealed to people to avoid wasteful use of power and voiced concern over the use of phase converters in farm sector operations. The demand-supply mismatch has further compounded the power crisis in the State which has forced the Transmission Corporation to go in for unscheduled power cuts. Mr Naidu said that the State's daily energy demand which was of the order of 129 million units per day on September 1,2002 had shot up to 145.3 MUs by September 13. It is averaging around 140-144 MUs per day due to continued dry spells and poor inflows into reservoirs and in the catchment areas. The Chief Minister said that the use of phase converters by farmers during the single-phase supply was on the rise. In the southern discoms, 205 cases in Nellore, 126 cases in Prakasam, including direct tappings, 51 cases in Chittoor were detected and prosecution initiated and about 500 cases had been detected in the Central discoms. The State power situation had worsened lately following the shutdown of 1,470 MW Neyveli lignite unit due to fire mishap and the Kalpakkam unit due to major overhaul. This had impaired supply of about 316 MW from these Central generating stations. This has been further compounded by scanty rains from the Southwest monsoon and very low water level and poor inflows into the Srisailam reservoir, hampering hydel generation.
