BSNL staff plan stir against divestment

Our Bureau

KOLKATA, Sept. 16

THE Co-ordination Committee of BSNL Employees Unions has threatened to launch an agitation to protest against the proposed disinvestment of the Government equity in Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL).

To begin with, about three lakh employees of BSNL will observe ``Anti-privatisation Day'' in BSNL establishments all over the country on September 19.

Stating this at a news conference held here, Mr Dilip Das, Convener of the Co-ordination Committee of BSNL Employees Unions, said employees of the organisation were opposed to the divestment of Government equity in it ``since BSNL is not a sick concern, but a profit-making one''.

According to him, disinvestment would be detrimental to the interests of the nation and the rural populace ``since private interests will not be able to meet the social obligations of providing telephone services in rural areas''.
