K.R. Srivats

NEW DELHI, Sept. 16

THE Madras Chamber of Commerce, a promoter chamber of the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham), has forsaken its right to nominate an Alternate President for Assocham for the ensuing year.

It has been a tradition in Assocham for the Alternate President to become the President of the chamber.Assocham's annual general meeting (AGM) is slated for September 28, when the next President and Alternate President are expected to take over the reins."This time, it was the turn of the Madras Chamber to nominate an Alternate President. But the Madras Chamber has given its turn to Indian Merchants Chamber for a year and declared that it will nominate an Alternate President for the next year," sources told Business Line.

IMC is likely to nominate Mr Mahinder K. Sanghi, who is currently the President of the India Chapter of International Chamber of Commerce, as the Alternate President of Assocham for the coming year, informed sources said.
