KSEB for more load-shedding

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Sept. 20

KERALA State Electricity Board (KSEB) has proposed to the Government to increase the existing daily load-shedding from half-an-hour to one hour.

This was decided at a meeting of the full board of KSEB on Thursday.

The proposed increase in load-shedding would help save one million units per day, according to a board statement.

The meeting also decided to curtail hydel generation to 11 million units per day, which would mean a cut in normal generation by 7-8 million units.

This is in view of the fact that the existing water availability in the reservoirs will not last till May 31 next year if the generation continues at the current rate.

The board has also proposed to the Government to purchase additional four million units from the Kayamkulam plant of National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) until power is available from the Thalchar-Kolar thermal station.

This will entail an additional outgo of Rs 45 crore for the board.

It has also been proposed to increase the generation at Brahmapuram and Kozhikode diesel plants from the current one million units to three million units.

The additional outgo on this account is estimated at Rs 17 crore.

Another proposal is for the purchase of two million units from Power Trading Corporation at a cost of Rs 15 crore.

All these measures put together would cost Rs 77 crore for the board and the Government should decide on how to make good this additional expenditure.
