Port, dock workers defer strike plan

Our Bureau

VISAKHAPATNAM, Sept. 20

THE proposed strike in major ports by the five port and dock workers' federations from September 25 has been put off.

According to the General Secretary of Port, Dock, Waterfront Workers' Federation of India, Mr V.V. Rama Rao, the federations had served strike notices on the port managements demanding uniformity in the implementation of productivity-linked rewards (PLR) instead of payment on the basis of the individual capacity of the ports on local agreements.

Mr Rama Rao, who participated in the conciliatory meeting convened by the Chief Labour Commissioner in New Delhi on Thursday, told presspersons here on Friday that the participants, in principle, agreed to payment of PLR for 2001-02 on a uniform basis subject to the approval of the Government.

Following the request of the Chairman of the Indian Ports' Association seeking 15-days' time to refer the matter to the Government, the conciliation proceedings were adjourned to October 8.

The next course of action would be based on the October 8 meeting to be held at Mumbai, he said.
