BANGALORE, Sept. 20

THE first pictures have been obtained from the country's exclusive meteorology satellite and they "are of excellent quality," ISRO said today.

Launched on September 12, Metsat is expected to reach its final designated slot on September 24 and the operational met services are expected to begin in the first week of October, ISRO said in a release.

The pictures were received after the Master Control Facility at Hassan switched on the VHRR (very high resolution radiometer) on board Metsat on Thursday.

The imaging in water vapour and infrared spectral bands was commanded this morning

The images were taken in the three spectral bands provided by the VHRR: visible, water vapour and thermal infrared. The imaging in water vapour and infrared spectral bands was commanded this morning. The earth image in the visible spectral band was taken in full-frame mode, which covers the full earth disc and the adjoining deep space.
