IICT process to help drugmakers

Our Bureau

HYDERABAD, Oct 1

IN an interesting laboratory-industry collaboration, the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT) has demonstrated an eco-friendly process that can break down the pollution causing methyl mercaptan, a by-product in the commercial production of Ranitidine.

Bulk drug companies producing Ranitidine can now look forward to the process which will help extract useful methane sulphonic acid, which has a good market value. Methyl mercaptan pollution has been causing concern in Hyderabad.

IICT has developed this technology under the UPTECH project of the Centre which is aimed at providing upgraded technologies for the cluster of bulk drug producing small and medium enterprises in Hyderabad. The process would be ready for commercialisation in six months, Dr K.V. Raghavan, Director of the IICT told newspersons on Tuesday. Another initiative to help the assessment of eco-friendliness of a chemical process was the development of a software package, which had been handed over to the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board, he said.
