MANGALORE, Oct. 2

THE Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Co-operative (Campco) has bought 10,251 quintals of fair average quality white (chali) areca.

The co-operative has been appointed the nodal agency for procurement of arecanut under a market intervention scheme being jointly implemented by the Centre and the Karnataka Government.

According to a communique issued here by the Campco President, Mr B. Nagaraja Shetty, 2,916 farmers have so far sold arecanut worth Rs 6,44,59,408 to Campco during September 2-28.

The Karnataka Government released a sum of Rs 6 crore towards the scheme on August 29. Under this, Campco is to purchase 10,000 tonnes (1,00,000 quintals) of `fair average quality' white arecanut (at a price of Rs. 60 per kg) before October 31 for which it has set up 16 procurement centres.

The State Government is yet to release an additional Rs 20 crore towards the scheme which, according to Mr Shetty, is expected within a week.

According to estimates, approximately one lakh tonnes (10,00,000 quintals) of `chali' areca is grown in Karnataka annually of which 10 per cent — that is, 10,000 tonnes — is to be procured under the market intervention scheme. Also, the quantum of arecanut to be purchased from each areca-growing district in the State is in the process of being determined by the Horticulture Department of the Karnataka Government, he added.
